Frequently asked questions

The scanner won't open or can't see a barcode

Camera access has to be granted to TallyScout dev. iOS: open the Settings app, scroll to TallyScout dev, and turn on Camera. Android: open Settings → Apps → TallyScout dev → Permissions → Camera and allow it. Then reopen the app and try the scanner again.

If the camera opens but barcodes don't get recognised, try a steadier hold, a bit more light, and make sure the whole barcode is inside the on-screen frame. Damaged or partly covered barcodes can fail — you can always tap Add manually instead.

A product isn't in the database

TallyScout dev pulls barcode data from Open Food Facts and similar open datasets. If a product isn't there yet you can add it as a custom item: tap Add manually, fill in the name, size and price, and it'll show up on your lists and price history straight away.

Custom items stay private to your account — they aren't shared with other users.

I can't sign in or reset my password

On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot password? and enter the email address you used to create the account. We'll send a reset link — check your spam or promotions folder if it doesn't arrive within a couple of minutes.

Still stuck? Email [email protected] from the address on the account and we'll sort it out for you.

How do I cancel or manage my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed by the app store you bought through, not by us. iOS: on your iPhone open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, choose TallyScout dev, and change plan or cancel there. Android: open the Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → TallyScout dev.

For refund requests: iOS: Apple handles those directly via reportaproblem.apple.com. Android: request via play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions or your Play Store order history.

How do I delete my account and data?

In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete account. You'll be asked to confirm. Once confirmed, your profile, lists, custom products and price history are removed.

If you can't sign in, email [email protected] from the address on the account and we'll delete it for you.

Some data is kept after deletion: anonymised, aggregated data (which can no longer be linked to you) is retained indefinitely; backups are overwritten within 30 days; and billing records are kept where required by law (up to 6 years, HMRC rules). See our Privacy Policy for details.

Where do the prices come from?

Prices in TallyScout dev are the prices you record. When you scan a product and enter the price you paid, that observation goes into your own price history, tied to the store you bought it from. Your price history is private to your account.

Product information itself (names, brands, images, nutrition) is looked up from public open datasets such as Open Food Facts — see Terms §7 for the full list.

To update a price, scan or add the item again with the new price — the latest entry becomes the current price for that store.

I found a bug or want to suggest a feature

We'd love to hear it. Send feature ideas to [email protected], and bugs to [email protected] with the steps to reproduce, your device OS and version (iOS or Android), and the app version (you can find it in Settings → About). Screenshots help a lot.
